Eva's Vineyard Merlot Kékfrankos 2009

This little red is from Hilltop Estate in Hungary. Merlot has been blended with Kékfrankos, a traditional variety better known in Austria and Germany as Blaufränkisch. It's only £3.79 per bottle - amongst the cheapest on offer in Waitrose - so I'm not expecting anything mind blowing.
Appearance: Light ruby.
Aroma: Brambly red fruit.
Flavour: Dry, medium bodied and astringent. Lots of young green tannins and strong acidity.
Sour cherries, green vegetation and aromatic spices.

Unripe fruit and green flavours dominate but the Merlot-Kékfrankos blend is intriguingly fragrant and it's certainly a refreshing change. Kudos to Waitrose for finding a drinkable wine at this remarkably low price. Recommended with fatty meat and carbs... Burger and chips anyone?
